Drew

Not in a million years would I have expected this to happen.

But it is. My assistant is standing right in front of me at an event she should know nothing about.

I should be more focused on the why of that. But I’m more focused on how different she looks. I like her like this. Her hair is pulled up in a sleek ponytail and the bit of makeup on her face highlights her natural beauty. But it’s the little black dress that has cost me my ability to think clearly.

I suddenly can’t remember why I have tortured myself with distance from her since the night I had almost taken her on the floor of my office.

Since then, my desire for Elyse has raged with such intensity that I have had to stay away from her if I am to show any restraint. I feel like a damned teenager. Every night, I wake up panting after erotic dreams about her. And then I have had to walk by the transparent walls of her office and try to school my mind into not imagining all the ways I could bend her over her tiny desk.

It is disturbing how this woman has stripped me of all reasoning.

When I saw her in the conference center, I’d been convinced that she was a figment of my imagination. But even the mirage of her had the power to pull me into a dark alley, seeking relief from my torment.

Right now, as my gaze lingers on her half-exposed thighs, I know I have to act like her boss, but my God, it is hard to even put a coherent question together.

“What are you doing here?” I couldn’t care less about why she’s here, not right now. But it’s the question she’d expect from me.

She swallows hard, her expression revealing something close to fear as she stares back at me. “Yeah. I thought I’d check in on this event. I was invited by a friend.”

A lie. I recognize it immediately. This is a state press conference. The only people milling about in there, apart from the press themselves, were avid readers of certain magazines or distinguished people who the press were eager to interview.

I’m only here to see what image my public relations team is painting of my company. How they are dazzling the crowd and drumming up interest in our products. We have to maintain the prime advertising spots in order to maintain our position as a top manufacturer of home goods. But that doesn’t explain Elyse’s presence here. Why would an attractive woman in her prime, hang out at a press conference on her day off, invited by a friend or not?

“Really?” I ask, folding my arms across my chest. “What magazine is your friend here for?”

“Pedal.” The answer comes out a little too quickly.

Pedal Magazine was a monthly magazine that specialized in fast cars and boasted a hundred percent male readership. My stomach drops.

A hundred percent male readership.

Elyse was invited to this event by one of her male friends.
